Roses are red, Violets are blue… Valentine’s Day is looming, what do you do?

Sending a Valentine's Day card? Nostalgic or Corny? Will you rush out to the shops and buy that someone you love, something romantic to celebrate Valentine's Day? Or is this a day that should solely be used to 'woo' someone you like but can't bring yourself to tell?

An old-fashioned swipe right if you like… And if you do buy a card, pop a stamp on it, and send it through the mail. Will S.W.A.L.K. appear on the reverse when you seal the envelope? (If you are over Gen-Z age then you’ll probably know what that stands for!) When I was in my teens I loved the anticipation of hearing the letterbox clatter as the postman delivered mail on Valentine’s Day. I would race to the doormat to sift through the post and see if there was that big red envelope. Fortunately for me, mum always sent a card, each year without fail, with just a big question mark inside. So even if I didn’t get any others – this always made me smile.

What makes my heart flutter on Valentine’s Day

I love having an extra day to show my appreciation for my loved one on Valentine’s Day. My partner and I might cook a romantic meal together, maybe choose a ‘Dine in for two’ option, light some romantic candles, and snuggle on the sofa. We can (and do) enjoy these moments throughout the year, but dedicating a special day to love encourages us to focus our attention more deeply on each other.

Genuine or rip-off?

However, the cynics out there may feel it is simply a money-making opportunity for shops and restaurants alike. Whatever your thoughts are on this day of love – I hope you can at least send a little bit of appreciation to a special ‘somebody’ in your life. Whether over the phone, in person, or of course, my favourite, the anonymous card through the post.

P.s If you’re in Edinburgh, pop in to our neighbours – Paper Tiger. They have amazing Valentine’s cards and unique gifts!
